What is pugged clay? "Pugged" clay refers to a type of clay that has been processed through a machine called a "pug mill." A pug mill is used in pottery and ceramics to mix, refine, and reclaim raw clay. The machine works by compressing the clay and forcing it through a screen into a vacuum chamber, which helps to remove air bubbles and make the clay more homogeneous and consistent in texture. The result is a "pugged" clay body that is ready to be shaped and used in a variety of applications, such as throwing on a potter's wheel or sculpting by hand.
